Insulin – Knowing how insulin affects body fat can help you eliminate it. Insulin is the only hormone that instructs the body to store energy as fat. Mostly released by the sugar and carbohydrates in your diet, it is one of the main reasons why carbohydrates affect belly fat, cravings and an increased appetite. The best way to decrease insulin to prevent belly fat is to increase your healthy fat and protein intake while lowering your consumption of starchy carbohydrates (white breads, grains, potatoes, rice, etc.) By doing this you will notice an increase in energy, stable blood sugar levels and a decrease in body fat. Example: switch out cereal for whole wheat toast with almond butter or a protein shake with added flax for fiber. Tip: add cinnamon to foods to help keep your blood sugar level all day.
Cortisol – (The Stress Hormone) Excess of this hormone increases appetite and cravings. It causes and targets abdominal belly fat. It also causes loss of memory, muscle, bone density and libido. Ways to prevent this would be of course to relax and not stress. Easier, said than done for some so here are some other ways to help. Eat a high protein breakfast within 1-2 hours of waking up, avoid more than a 3 hour gap between meals or snacks and get a sufficient amount of sleep 7 ½ to 8 hours is recommended.
Estrogen – For both women and men, you want to eliminate excess estrogen. Estrogen is associated with water retention, poor libido, losing belly fat and weight gain around the midsection and breast area for both men and women. To help eliminate harmful estrogen you need to increase your fiber intake (minimum of 35 grams per day is recommended) and supplementing daily with a probiotic to replace a healthy bacterial balance which is essential for supporting belly-fat loss.
